& Falls SIG
As a Section on Geriatrics member,
you can participate in the Balance and Falls Special Interest
Group (Balance and Falls SIG).
Look for information regarding the Balance
and Falls SIG in each issue of Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy and GeriNotes,
on the web at
www.neuropt.org and www.geriatricspt.org,
or plan to attend our meetings at Combined Sections or Annual
Conference.
Joining the Balance and Falls SIG is
easy. Just fax a note including your name, physical
address, e-mail address and phone number to 703-706-8575.

| SIG Description |
The primary
purpose of the Balance and Falls SIG is to provide
a forum for the increase of knowledge and quality of practice
for physical therapists in relation to older persons with
balance problems and an increased risk for falling. The SIG
uses various means to foster discussion and communication
among its members. These include programs at CSM, articles
in Gerinotes or other publications, and newsletters to members.
Interested Section on Geriatrics members are encouraged to
provide email addresses for communication. |

The Section on Geriatrics Balance and Falls
Special Interest Group has developed a PowerPoint presentation
that can be used by Section members. We hope you will
use this PowerPoint whenever you have a chance to educate
consumers about Balance and Falls. This PowerPoint is
free to Section on Geriatrics members- thank you for
your membership! Please do not make changes to the presentation.

- To accompany the PowerPoint presentation, we have created
two consumer brochures. Please feel free to print these,
copy them, and hand them out when you make your presentation.
Both of the below documents are the same, except one
leaves space for you to put your business card. You can
tape your card in the space provided, make copies in
black and white or color, and distribute them to attendees,
or make copies and attach your business card to each
one.
- PTA also has a "Balance and Falls" Brochure, which can be printed and copied for free by visiting www.apta.org and
clicking on "Consumers," and then clicking "PT
and Your Body." (Our brochure will copy onto
one page: APTA's is longer.) APTA also sells professionally
printed copies of this brochure, and a Balance and Falls
event screening kit. To view these items, go to www.apta.org and
click "store."
